Notre Dame's defense is off to an absolutely dominant start to the 2026 season. Through four games, they have yet to allow an opponent to reach 14 points, 285 total yards of offense or 68 rushing yards as a team. Yesterday's matchup against Purdue was certainly no exception. The Irish came out hot and shut out the Boilermakers in the first half. It wasn't until their final offensive drive of the game Purdue put together a full offensive possession. 

The Fighting Irish defense held Purdue to 218 total yards of offense, but 75 of that came on the final drive of the game. Going into their final possession, the Boilermakers were held to 143 total yards of offense. Defensive coordinator Chris Ash has put on a clinic through September with the exceptional talent they have on defense. Here is my key takeaways from Notre Dame's defense in their dominant outing yesterday afternoon inside of Ross-Ade Stadium. 

DEFENSIVE LINE IS INSANE

Coming into the season, we knew that Notre Dame had the potential to have an outstanding defensive line. They had depth, experience, size, talent and athleticism and were now being coached by one of the best in the business, Charlie Partridge. So far, through four games, they haven't disappointing and their dominance was on full display in yesterday's 39-point beat down over the Boilermakers. 

As a defense, Notre Dame recorded 9.0 tackles for loss and 6.0 sacks. Of those plays, 6.5 of their 9.0 tackles for loss came from the defensive line while 5.5 of their 6.0 sacks came from the defensive line. Defensive end Bryce Young is on an absolute tear right now, but we also saw members of the interior defensive line had strong performances as well. This is the most disruptive we've seen Armel Mukam this season and true freshman Rodney Dunham continues to make his presence felt in his opportunities as an edge rusher. 

JOEY O'BRIEN IS GOING TO BE A STAR 

Due to injuries to Brauntae Johnson and Luke Talich, true freshman safety Joey O'Brien got the start today alongside senior captain Adon Shuler. O'Brien was my 'player to watch on defense' on Friday and he did not disappoint in his first collegiate start. The 6-5, 200-pound freshman finished the afternoon third on the team in tackles with five. He also recorded 0.5 tackles for loss and half a sack, shared with defensive end Boubcar Traore.

O'Brien wasn't targeted much in the pass game, and was certainly not afraid to fly down hill and make tackles. When Johnson and Talich are back to health, they'll resume their role in the starting lineup/rotation. But O'Brien's performance yesterday afternoon earned him much more playing time on defense moving forward. 

PASS DEFENSE ACED THE FIRST TEST

Statistically, this was going to be the biggest test for Notre Dame's pass defense they faced so far this season. Coming into this matchup, Purdue ranked No. 3 in the country in passing yards per game (366.7) and did it against Indiana State and two P4 teams (Wake Forest and UCLA). Yesterday, Notre Dame held Purdue to 178 total passing yards as a team while starting quarterback Ryan Browne was held to a mere 111 yards through the air. Browne has passed for at least 317 yards in every game this season until facing the Irish. 

Notre Dame's defense gave Browne a heck of a day in the pocket. They sacked him 6.0 times and didn't allow a single receiver to gain over 36 yards through the air. This was a dominant performance from the Fighting Irish secondary and defensive pass game coordinator Aaron Henry. This defense is firing on all cylinders and are shutting down the run at an elite level. Yesterday, they showed that they can shut down a primary passing attack at an elite level as well.
