Former Oregon Ducks defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi claimed a major transfer portal win on Monday night, as former Ducks safety Kingston Lopa announced his decision to commit to Cal, where Lupoi is now the head coach.
Lopa entered the transfer portal on Dec. 21, one day after Oregon took down James Madison in the College Football Playoff first round. He was not with the team in Miami during their 23-0 win over Texas Tech in the quarterfinals.
The 6-foot-5, 200-pounder saw action in four regular season games as a true freshman in 2024, utilizing a redshirt. He saw more time this year, appearing in all 13 games that he was available, as he finished with 12 tackles, one pass defensed and one sack. But it was all in a reserve role, as he was beat out for the starting safety jobs by Dillon Thieneman and Aaron Flowers.

But now joining the Golden Bears, a new opportunity awaits for the Sacramento, CA, native. Lopa was the No. 6 rated safety in the portal and No. 109 overall player, representing a significant talent grab for Lupoi as he begins a new era of Cal football. He will have three years of eligibility remaining.
Lopa became the third former Oregon defensive back to commit to a new school, as Jahlil Florence (Missouri) and Dakoda Fields (Oklahoma) have also found new homes via the portal.
