Kirby Smart on Georgia football's top transfers

The Georgia Bulldogs‘ transfer class is headlined by Georgia Tech transfer wide receiver Isiah Canion and Auburn transfer edge rusher Amaris Williams.

Georgia’s transfers are all around for the Bulldogs’ spring practice. Georgia coach Kirby Smart already has some observations on Georgia’s top transfers.

“Isiah (Canion) is a guy we knew about in high school,” Smart said. “I remember Coach Bobo going down and watching him practice, and he made a couple really acrobatic catches. He was in the back of our mind all along.

“Of course, we got to play against him last year, and he made some plays against us last year in that game. The more familiar you are with someone through recruiting, the more success we’ve had. He’s a good football player. He’s an even better person, and he played with several guys on our team, so there’s a relationship there.”

Canion could end up as Georgia’s top receiver this season. At the very least, the 6-foot-4, 215-pound pass catcher is expected to compete for a starting role a year after hauling in 33 receptions for 480 yards and four touchdowns with Georgia Tech. Canion will help ease the void left after the Bulldogs lost receivers Dillon Bell, Zachariah Branch, Colbie Young and Noah Thomas to the 2026 NFL draft.

Auburn transfer Amaris Williams also provides a boost a position of need. Georgia was last in the SEC in sacks last season and brought in the twitchy, explosive Auburn transfer to try to generate more pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

“He’s got to be able to play within our system, understand our system, but also add value,” Smart said. “He can start by taking the reps he’s going to get this spring.”

Georgia is without defensive end Gabe Harris this spring, so there are more reps at edge rusher. “We want to see the growth in that room and see those guys continue to get better,” Smart added. Williams is a key piece of the puzzle for the Georgia defense, which needs more pass rush production in 2026.
