Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart provided a quick injury update on defensive back Joenel Aguero, who has missed some action this season due to a hand/wrist injury and has needed to have his hand wrapped for much of the year. Aguero usually starts at STAR for the Georgia defense, but against Alabama in the SEC championship he did not start.
In Aguero’s place, Georgia started freshman Rasean Dinkins in the SEC championship. Dinkins impressed despite only posting one tackle.
“Yeah, Joenel (Aguero)’s with us every day,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said. “He’s trying to get healthy and get better and make himself available.”
Dinkins played so well against Alabama and we’d expect him to have a significant role for the defense in the College Football Playoff. According to Smart, Dinkins has been practicing at a high level.
“(Rasean Dinkins) Dink’s gotten a lot of reps,” Smart added. “Jaden’s (Harris) gotten a lot of reps with his absences. We’ve rolled some guys through there. But it’s always great to get more reps. You know, Dink’s repped all year.”
The extended layoff should give Aguero time to get healthier while Georgia could also return safety Kyron Jones, who has missed significant time due to a foot injury. Georgia has used the extra preparation time to heal up some, but the Bulldogs could have also picked up some injuries in practice, but we probably won’t find out until the Bulldogs release their first injury report three days in advance of the Sugar Bowl against the Ole Miss Rebels.
