No. 5 Georgia lost two key offensive players during its 41-21 victory over Mississippi State on Nov. 8.
Junior tight end Lawson Luckie took a nasty hit to the head late in the second quarter on an incompletion. He was down and motionless on the field for an extended period of time while members of Georgia‘s training staff attended to him.
When he was finally up and mobile, he was taken to the medical tent and did not return to the game.
The hit ended up being called for targeting by a Mississippi State defensive back.
Luckie’s mother, Hillary, posted an update to Facebook on Sunday in response to the hundreds of well-wishes and check-ins she’d received about her oldest son, writing that “it’s probably every football parent’s biggest fear to see your child get hit like that and not move.”
At his weekly press conference Monday, Nov. 10, Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart said that Luckie is doing well. The message was similar in his postgame conference on Saturday.
“He’s going to make a good, quick turn,” Smart said.
Senior tight end Oscar Delp said Monday that after Luckie took the hit, he immediately found the team chaplain, and together they prayed for his fellow tight end on the field. He was relieved to see Luckie back on the sidelines during the second half and said Luckie was “back to himself” when they were chopping it up.
Redshirt freshman offensive lineman Drew Bobo suffered a bad laceration to his finger, but Smart said he’s bandaged up and ready to go practice today.
Georgia (8-1, 6-1) will host No. 10 Texas (7-2, 4-1) on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 7:30 p.m. on ABC. Texas was off last week but defeated Vanderbilt, 34-31, on Nov. 1.
