Know Your Foe: Oklahoma State Faces Oregon Star QB Dante Moore

Oklahoma State's defense passed its first major test of the season in one area against Tulsa. Now the degree of difficulty rises dramatically.
When Oregon visits Boone Pickens Stadium on Saturday, the Cowboys will have to find a way to slow down quarterback Dante Moore, one of the nation's most talented passers and a player Oklahoma State already knows all too well.
Moore enters Stillwater coming off a career performance in Oregon's season opener against Boise State. He completed 28 of 37 passes for a career-high 378 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions as the Ducks rallied for a 34-27 victory.
His biggest throw came when Oregon needed it most. Trailing in the fourth quarter, Moore connected with Dakorien Moore for a 62-yard touchdown that put the Ducks ahead. It's exactly the type of explosive play Oklahoma State can't afford to surrender Saturday.
Tulsa produced six plays of at least 20 yards against the Cowboys despite converting just one of 11 third-down attempts. Oregon presents a much different challenge, beginning with a quarterback capable of attacking virtually every part of the field.
Oklahoma State coach Eric Morris sees the complete package.
"He has a really smooth stroke," Morris said. "The ball gets out fast. Quick release. He's accurate. He's athletic. He's a full-package guy and somebody I think is going to play football for a really long time."
Oklahoma State Already Knows Dante Moore
Saturday won't be Oklahoma State's first encounter with Moore. Far from it.
Moore was Oregon's quarterback when the Cowboys traveled to Eugene last season, and he helped turn the matchup into a nightmare for OSU.
He completed 16 of 21 passes for 266 yards and three touchdowns as Oregon dismantled Oklahoma State 69-3.
A year later, almost everything surrounding the Cowboys has changed. Mike Gundy is gone. Morris is now leading the program. Oklahoma State brought in 91 newcomers during an offseason roster overhaul, while Skyler Cassity took over a rebuilt defense.
Moore remains. And if Week 1 was any indication, he's even more dangerous.
Moore's Path to Oregon
Moore's journey to becoming Oregon's starter began long before last season.
The former five-star prospect was one of the nation's highest-rated quarterbacks coming out of Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School in Detroit. He began his college career at UCLA before transferring to Oregon.
After spending the 2024 season behind Dillon Gabriel, Moore took over the Ducks' offense in 2025 and quickly established himself as one of college football's premier quarterbacks.
Rather than jumping to the NFL, Moore returned to Eugene for another season under Dan Lanning. That decision gave Oregon an experienced quarterback with NFL-level talent at the center of another team with championship expectations.
The Challenge for Oklahoma State
For the Cowboys, Saturday's matchup might ultimately come down to whether they can make Moore uncomfortable.
Oklahoma State's defense showed encouraging signs against Tulsa. The Cowboys repeatedly got off the field on third down, holding the Golden Hurricane to a 1-of-11 conversion rate. Ethan Wesloski was active around the football, while the defense kept OSU within striking distance despite the offense committing four turnovers.
But there was also an obvious weakness. Explosive plays. Tulsa averaged 6.3 yards per play and generated six plays of at least 20 yards.
Now comes Moore, who showed against Boise State exactly how quickly Oregon can turn one defensive mistake into six points.
That leaves Cassity and the Cowboys with a difficult balancing act.
Generating pressure could disrupt Moore's timing, but becoming overly aggressive risks exposing the secondary to Oregon's playmakers downfield. Sitting back and giving Moore time presents its own problems against a quarterback Morris describes as accurate, athletic and equipped with a quick release.
There may not be a perfect answer.

Oklahoma State entered its opener trying to contain Tulsa quarterback Baylor Hayes.
Seven days later, the challenge is on an entirely different level. The Cowboys have already experienced what happens when Moore gets comfortable.
If Oklahoma State has any chance of pulling off a massive upset Saturday in Stillwater, preventing it from happening again has to be priority No. 1.
