AUBURN — Kodi Burns is returning to the Plains, according to multiple reports, as a piece of Alex Golesh‘s Auburn football coaching staff, headlining a number of reported additions.

Golesh was hired as the 33rd head coach in program history Sunday, Nov. 30, replacing Hugh Freeze nearly a month after his firing.

In what’ll be his third stint as an Auburn assistant coach, Burns returns with a few other coaches from Golesh’s South Florida staff. He’ll be joined by four of members of Golesh’s final USF staff: co-Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Joel Gordon, offensive line coach and run game coordinator Tyler Hudanick, cornerbacks coach DeMarcus Van Dyke and head strength and condition coach George Courides.

Roles for those respective coaches on Golesh’s staff have yet to be announced.

Burns was Golesh’s co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach this fall, his eighth stop in a 13-year career. That includes a pair of stints at Auburn, his alma mater, where he played from 2007-10 and won a national championship his senior season. Burns first joined an Auburn coaching staff in 2013 after Gus Malzahn was hired. Burns followed Malzahn from Arkansas State, where he was a graduate assistant, and filled the same role at Auburn.

The next season, Burns left to become the running backs coach at Samford. He spent the following year as Middle Tennessee’s wide receivers coach then returned to Malzahn in 2016, serving as passing game coordinator, co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach until Malzahn’s firing in 2020.

Burns joined Golesh’s USF staff this season, but the pair worked together in 2021 on Josh Heupel’s Tennessee staff.
