Kordell Stewart has interest in the open Colorado State football coaching position.
How do I know this? Super sleuthing? Deep sources in Stewart's camp?
Nah, his agency is telling people.
Longtime reporter Josina Anderson posted on X the morning of Nov. 11 of Stewart's interest. Not long after, an email from his agency (Young Money APAA Sports) hit my inbox with a subject line of "Kordell Stewart — Candidate for CSU Head Football Coach."
The email said "A Colorado Sports Hall of Famer, Kordell brings deep ties to the state and a wealth of football experience, along with a coaching staff of accomplished NFL veterans."
This is all well and good. His agency is doing its job, trying to promote a client. And hey, we're talking about it.
But this is a lesson in "be careful what you see" when a program like CSU is going through a coaching search. Lots of names will be mentioned as "interested in" or something along those lines.
These are often agent-driven. This one clearly is and not trying to hide it (it behooves them for Anderson to post this idea to her 254,500 followers on X). Others are more subtle, where an agent will push to get the name of their coach dropped in a story from reputable national reporter.
I've had agents reach out to me before about potential candidates, although not quite as to-the-point as this one.
Is Stewart ("Slash" as many know him) a candidate at CSU? I wouldn't imagine so. For one, he's a legendary player for the University of Colorado. That could be a tricky PR sell for the Rams.
More importantly, he doesn't have the experience. Best as I can tell, his coaching experience is limited to volunteer work at South Forsyth High School. His agency and Anderson's post say he has assembled a "veteran staff of prominent NCAA & NFL coaches." I have no doubt he has connections, but a first-time coach with no other coaching experience isn't a path CSU wants to go down.
I grew up a big Stewart fan. He was fun to watch. Maybe he'll become the next in a growing line of famous players turned head coaches in college football.
This PR push to state his interest means he hasn't been involved in CSU's search, which I'm told is moving right along toward a narrow shortlist.
Lots of people are and would be interested in this job. Heck, if John Weber calls me, I'll do it at a discount rate of just $1.5 million per year.
So, as CSU fans wait for news of the next hire, just remember that a name being "interested in" the job doesn't mean they're a real candidate.
