The changes keep coming in Ann Arbor, and new Michigan football head coach Kyle Whittingham promised that he would have much of his coaching staff in place by the weekend. And that seems to be the case.
The past few days have seen a bevy of additions to the staff. Whittingham reportedly made the following hires, with only the coordinators confirmed by the school.
- OC Jason Beck
- RB Tony Alford
- WR Micah Simon
- QB Koy Detmer Jr.
- OL Jim Harding
- TE Freddie Whittingham
- DC Jay Hill
- EDGE Lewis Powell
- DL Lou Esposito
- ST Kerry Coombs
That leaves only linebackers and defensive backs. And now one of those roles is being filled.
According to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz, Michigan football is hiring BYU cornerbacks coach Jernaro Gilford, meaning LaMar Morgan appears to be on his way out.

Gilford is a former BYU player and has been the team’s cornerbacks coach since 2016. BYU had the 50th pass defense this year (Michigan was 54th), but it was 20th in 2024, 22nd in 2020, and 29th in 2018.
With that role filled, Michigan only needs a linebackers coach and strength and conditioning coach to complete the top of line staff.
