Founded in 1960, "Dave Campbell's Texas Football" magazine is perhaps the most recognized and respected such publication for the state one of the most recognized and respected in the country.

So when Carter Yates wrote up his 10 best high-school quarterbacks in state history for the magazine this week, it turned some heads. An Oklahoma football player ranking at the top of it is sure to go over interestingly.

But that's where Kyler Murray found himself, No. 1 on the all-time list, just ahead of Garrett Gilbert (Texas), Graham Harrell (Texas Tech), Matthew Stafford (Georgia) and Travis Quintanilla (Texas A&M-Kingsville).

"Murray is the only player in state history to pass for over 10,000 yards and rush more over 4,000 yards in his career," Yates wrote. "He went 42-0 with three consecutive state championships as the Allen Eagles starting quarterback, an unprecedented run for the state's largest classification."

Things were fine at the next level, too, of course. He won the Heisman Trophy in 2018 at OU after transferring from Texas A&M after the 2015 season. Murray threw for 4,361 yards with 42 touchdowns, leading the nation in both categories. The Sooners went to the College Football Playoff that season, falling to Alabama in the semifinals.

OU is expected to compete for such status again in 2026 and current quarterback John Mateer finds himself on plenty of preseason Heisman watch lists heading into the fall, as well. The Sooners open the season Sept. 5 at home against Texas-El Paso.
