La Salle downs Easton in PIAA Class 6A football quarterfinal

BETHLEHEM — Anybody who thought the path through the Philadelphia Catholic League champion would be easier this season because three-time defending PIAA Class 6A titlist St. Joseph’s Prep didn’t make the state playoffs needs to reconsider.

On Friday night, La Salle, which vanquished Prep in the PCL championship game, handed undefeated Easton a 49-7 loss in a PIAA quarterfinal game at Bethlehem Liberty High School.

La Salle's JP Oates, 2, celebrates his touchdown against Easton with teammates, Joey O'Brien, 6, Josh Simmons, 8, and Chima Auguste, 12, during the PIAA football quarterfinals in Bethlehem on Nov. 21, 2025.

“We’ve gotten better and better as the season has gone along,” La Salle senior quarterback Gavin Sidwar said.

“We have so many weapons and a lot of really talented guys and we just want to keep going and keep getting the chance to play football together.”

It took a little while, but once La Salle got going Friday night, the Explorers never stopped.

After a scoreless first quarter, La Salle used four second-quarter touchdowns to blow open the game. Then, on their first drive of the third quarter, the Explorers scored again to make it 35-0 which kicked in the mercy rule and a running clock.

The win moved the Explorers into next week’s PIAA semifinals against North Penn, winner of the District One 6A championship after defeating Pennridge 21-14, also Friday night.

“We know that North Penn is a really good team,” said La Salle senior tight end J.P. Oates, a Temple commit.

“We’ll prepare for them as best we can and be ready to go.”

Oates had perhaps the game’s biggest play and it came right after super sophomore receiver Owen Johnson scored the game’s first touchdown on a 19-yard pass from Sidwar early in the second quarter.

The Red Rovers fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Oates grabbed it and raced in from 17 yards out to make it 14-0. Two La Salle touchdowns in nine seconds of game time all but doomed Easton.

“Nobody really talks about J.P., but he’s a heckuva football player,” La Salle second-year head coach Brett Gordon said.

“And him picking up that fumble on the kickoff and scoring really turned the momentum our way and got us going.”

Indeed it did as La Salle scored on its next two possessions, a 5-yard run by Ahzir Nelson and a 30-yard touchdown catch by Oates, again, put things away.

By the numbers

The Easton band has to have close to 300 members and they’re loud, talented and entertaining.

The Red Rovers had possession for nearly 11 minutes in the first quarter (10:57 to be exact), but couldn’t score.

They said it

“Easton had a really good game plan and you saw that in the first quarter,” Gordon said. “They wanted to keep the ball away from us and they did that.

“They had the ball for almost the whole first quarter and that was impressive.”
