Lane Kiffin brushed off a first half scuffle in the Egg Bowl, but insisted his No. 7 Ole Miss team kept its composure when tempers boiled over Friday in Starkville.
The benches cleared in the second quarter after quarterback Trinidad Chambliss appeared to fumble on a scramble. The play initially ruled a turnover before officials signaled a forward arm motion and sent the call to review. The stoppage quickly devolved into a mid-field scrum.
ABC’s broadcast crew reported tight end Daequan Wright initiated the shoving that escalated into thrown punches, emptying both sidelines onto the field.
The replay review ultimately overturned the call, ruling an incomplete pass. Personal-foul penalties were assessed to Ole Miss defensive backs Deuce Alexander and Delano Townsend and Mississippi State linebacker Malick Sylla. With the flags offset, the down was replayed. Ole Miss later punted while leading 14-7 late in the first half. No players were ejected.
Kiffin used his halftime walk to stress the contrast.
Lane Kiffin on Mississippi State: "We just try to play clean football. We try to execute and play really good football. For a whole sideline to try to fight and leave their whole sideline, including their athletic director, I've never seen anything like it… we're not trying to… pic.twitter.com/lDmOguPN0k

“We’re trying to play clean football,” Kiffin told ESPN’s Taylor McGregor. “For a whole sideline to try to fight and leave their whole sideline, including their athletic director? I just didn’t like it. I’m reminding them we’re trying to play football here. Not start a fight. So our university can get credit for fighting people.”
Kiffin also referenced Mississippi State athletic director Zac Selmon, who cameras showed on the field during the jawing back-and-forth.
“Our guys stayed on the sideline like they’re supposed to,” Kiffin said. When asked if he needed to speak to his team about the incident, Kiffin shook his head. “We’re good,” he said.
