Lane Kiffin is back in the eye of a college football storm, and this time, he is not keeping quiet. After LSU became the first program to sign players straight out of NFL rookie camps thanks to fresh 2026 court orders, fans and media instantly painted Kiffin as the villain corrupting the sport. But according to him, everyone is looking at the wrong guy.

Taking to The Pat McAfee Show, the LSU head coach pushed back hard against the outrage. Kiffin pulled back the curtain on how transfer recruiting actually went down, revealing that he was far from the only coach reaching out to these newly eligible pros.

When courts began issuing temporary restraining orders allowing 2022 recruit classes an unexpected fifth year, Kiffin moved fast to secure players like tight end Dae’Quan Wright and defensive lineman Zxavian Harris. Kiffin argues his only real offense was actually winning those roster battles, while other schools quietly chased the same talent.

“So, in there, a couple things you brought up. You know that an injunction in Baton Rouge, where a court order was issued to allow these players,” Kiffin said. “There’s court orders in South Carolina, Georgia, California, Kentucky, all over the country issuing the same thing for these kids, and so we followed those as many coaches did.”

The legal fight boils down to a simple fix: judges decided the NCAA wrongly stripped a year of eligibility from over a hundred athletes who started college in 2022. These were not ten-year NFL veterans looking for a retirement spot, but 22-year-olds who got cut from summer camps and suddenly found out they had legal permission to return to school.

He openly admits that he does not love the idea of professional players coming back to college sports.

However, he emphasizes that these guys are not seasoned NFL veterans who finished a ten-year career and randomly decided to go back to school. They are young athletes who were just in rookie training camps or mini-camps when the court ruling finally came down, and they made a business decision to secure their futures.

This is where Kiffin exposes the double standard across the SEC. He knew that signing a player like Dae’Quan Wright would draw heat, but he pointed out that rival SEC programs were blowing up the phone of Wright’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, offering massive NIL money behind closed doors. “Whoever the first player committed to was going to be the poster child,” Kiffin said, pointing out that rival teams were desperate for the same players while publicly acting outraged.

Kiffin is calling out rival conferences for picking and choosing when to respect the law. For years, programs across the country celebrated court orders whenever they granted a star quarterback an extra season. Now that LSU leveraged those exact same legal steps to upgrade its roster, those same rivals are demanding rule changes to block these players from taking the field.

At the end of the day, Kiffin views this as basic survival in elite college sports. Coaches who do not win get fired, period. Rather than apologizing for taking advantage of valid court orders, Kiffin is letting rival coaches complain while he prepares his newly stacked roster for kickoff.
