Lane Kiffin Floated as Candidate for NFL Head Coaching Job

The coaching carousel at both the college football and NFL levels is spinning, and there isn’t a more popular name in the country than Ole Miss’ Lane Kiffin.

The No. 6 Rebels’ head coach has led the team to a 9-1 record and has the team in a prime position to make the program’s first-ever College Football Playoff appearance this season. The Rebels have the second-easiest remaining strength of schedule in the SEC and rank No. 51 among all FBS programs in this category, according to ESPN FPI.

With the sixth-year head coach finding success in Oxford, his name has been suggested as a replacement for the Florida Gators, who fired Billy Napier, and LSU, who fired Brian Kelly a couple of weeks ago. The head coach addressed the rumors with his team earlier in the season, but that hasn’t stopped his name from frequently popping up as a candidate; a sentiment that continued on Monday, this time at the NFL level.

The New York Giants fired head coach Brian Daboll after compiling a 20-40-1 record at the helm in four years. While Kiffin got an opportunity to coach in the NFL in 2007-08 with the Oakland Raiders, who made him the youngest coach in NFL history at 31 years old, Kiffin lasted just 20 games before he was fired.

With all the time that has passed, and Kiffin’s former Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart behind center for the Giants, former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III suggested that Kiffin should be the next head coach of the Giants.

“The New York Giants should hire Lane Kiffin,” wrote Griffin on X.

It’s unclear whether Kiffin would ever return to the NFL level, but regardless of where he ends up next season, he will likely see a significant raise from his $9 million this season.
