It was just three weeks into the 2025 college football season when the first coaches were fired. DeShaun Foster was let go after an 0-3 start at UCLA, and Brent Pry was let go after an 0-3 start at Virginia Tech. Throughout the regular season, James Franklin was dismissed at Penn State, Billy Napier was let go at Florida, and Brian Kelly was shipped off from LSU. This led to 33 jobs changing hands going into the 2026 season.
As the 2027 season gets underway, there will be coaches who find themselves on the unemployment line. This will lead to new opportunities for other coaches, and two of Lane Kiffin’s LSU assistants could be at the top of the list of coaching candidates, per Pete Nakos of On3.
Blake Baker, the LSU defensive coordinator, and Charlie Weis Jr, the LSU offensive coordinator, could both be up for head coaching jobs in 2027.

“The Tigers’ defensive coordinator decided to turn down the Tulane job this past offseason to stay in Baton Rouge on Lane Kiffin’s new staff. Viewed as one of the top defensive coordinators in the sport, he’s emerged as a head coaching candidate as he turned around the LSU defense. Under Baker, the Tigers ranked 15th in scoring defense and 25th nationally in total defense in 2025. A former Tulane linebacker, he also has held coordinator roles at Louisiana Tech, Miami and Missouri,” Nakos wrote of Baker.
Baker has consistently coached great defensive units. He coached Miami (FL) to a 13th-ranked defensive unit, beyond coaching a solid LSU unit in 2025.
“One of the smartest offensive minds in the sport, Weis followed Lane Kiffin from Ole Miss to LSU. The Rebels led the SEC in total offense in both 2024 and 2025 under Weis and finished No. 3 in the league in total offense in 2022 and 2023. Weis was one of the youngest offensive coordinators in the sport at FAU in 2018, but he’s grown into one of the top playcallers and will be a popular name in this carousel,” Nakos wrote of Weis.
Weis has been around football his entire life. He is the son of former Notre Dame and Kansas head coach Charlie Weis. He has also developed his offensive mind under the tutelage of Lane Kiffin. Weis worked for Kiffin at Alabama in 2015 and 2016. He followed Steve Sarkisian to the Atlanta Falcons in 217, before rejoining Kiffin in 2018 at FAU. When Kiffin left for Ole Miss, Weiss spent two years at South Florida. He would join Kiffin again at Ole Miss in 2022 and has been with him since.
Other coaches mentioned as potentially finding head jobs in 2027 were both Indiana coordinators, Bryant Haines and Mike Shanahan, as well as Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann and Florida offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson.
LSU opens its season against Clemson in a huge non-conference game on September 5.
