We’re in Day 4 of the Lane Kiffin coaching search saga involving Florida, LSU and Ole Miss football.
At this point it appears no one knows what decision Kiffin will make.
The Rebels (10-1, 6-1 SEC) are the No. 6 team in the country and in great position to make the College Football Playoff for the first time.
They are in an open week before playing at rival Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl on Nov. 28 (11 a.m. CT, ABC).
Here’s the latest news and updates as fans of the Rebels, Gators and Tigers wait on a decision.
Will Lane Kiffin coach in Egg Bowl?
Lane Kiffin was insistent Nov. 19 that he expects to coach the Rebels in the Egg Bowl.
There have been reports that if he were to tell Ole Miss that he was leaving, he wouldn’t coach in the Egg Bowl. There have also been reports that Ole Miss gave Kiffin a deadline of the Egg Bowl to make a decision, but Kiffin denied that on the “Pat McAfee Show.”
Kiffin, 50, spoke about the job rumors on the weekly SEC teleconference. He said he didn’t understand the question when asked if he will coach against the Bulldogs.
“Of course I’m coaching (the Egg Bowl),” he said. “I mean, unless you guys know something I don’t.”
How is Lane Kiffin’s ex-wife Layla Kiffin involved in the decision?
Lane Kiffin’s ex-wife Layla Kiffin moved to Oxford from California this year along with son Knox Kiffin, who is a sophomore quarterback at Oxford High School.
Layla Kiffin was among the family members who toured Gainesville, Florida, where Florida is, and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where LSU is, on Nov. 16 and 17, according to media reports.
Layla Kiffin has lived in Gainesville. Her dad, former Florida star and NFL quarterback John Reaves, died in 2017.
How does Lane Kiffin’s son Knox Kiffin figure into decision?
Lane Kiffin and Layla Kiffin have three children.
Their oldest daughter, Landry, is a student at Ole Miss. Their middle daughter, Presley, plays volleyball at Southern Cal.
On3 reported that Kiffin’s son, Knox, and ex-wife Layla met with Buchholz High School football coach Mark Whittemore on Nov. 16. His team is 10-1. Buchholz is in Gainesville, and it is where Layla went to high school, according to the report.
Knox, a sophomore, is the starting quarterback for the Oxford Chargers, who are in the Class 7A playoffs and will host Horn Lake on Nov. 21 (7 p.m. CT) in the second round. Knox is a Class of 2028 prospect and already has eight offers.
Kiffin was asked Nov. 19 about his family, and if his children being in high school and college make it harder to move than if they were younger.
“I do think that people with time change and, maybe when they’re younger you make really fast decisions — which I’ve gone on record, said that before — in life, and in situations,” Kiffin said. “And I think as you get older and more mature and look at things different, maybe you take longer to make the proper decision. I would say that, just in general.”
Florida was interviewing Jon Sumrall, then the Gators weren’t
What does a report about Tulane coach Jon Sumrall‘s canceled interview with Florida mean for Kiffin?
Sumrall is not meeting with Florida on Nov. 20, according to On3, which reported earlier Nov. 19 that he was.
On3 also reported Sumrall was taking his name out of consideration for the Florida job. He is considered a top candidate for the Auburn job, according to media reports.
The prospect of Florida hiring Sumrall was not necessarily good or bad for Ole Miss. On one hand, it would presumably bring down the contenders for Kiffin to just LSU and Ole Miss. On the other hand, it would wipe a head coaching candidate with Ole Miss ties off the board.
Sumrall worked as Ole Miss‘ linebackers coach in 2018.
What is Lane Kiffin’s contract, salary?
Ole Miss’ win against Oklahoma on Oct. 25 triggered an automatic contract extension for Kiffin.
Because it was Ole Miss‘ seventh regular-season win, Kiffin’s state contract with the Ole Miss Athletic Foundation will be automatically extended one year on Jan. 1, 2026. His contract now runs through Dec. 31, 2031.
The added year will be worth $9 million, with $7.2 million guaranteed.
Kiffin’s $9 million salary is tied for No. 6 in the SEC.
Lane Kiffin buyout
As of Dec. 1, 2025, if Ole Miss fires Kiffin without cause, he would be set to receive $36.6 million.
It is the 15th-most expensive buyout of the 105 programs USA TODAY Sports could review, and No. 7 in the SEC.
