Lane Kiffin’s first offseason at LSU already comes with a storyline that blends roster management and family ties.
LSU linebacker Whit Weeks announced he will return for the 2026 season, a significant boost for the Tigers and Kiffin, who continues to lock down key pieces of the roster in Baton Rouge.
“College is too much fun to leave, and there is no better place in the country to be right now than Baton Rouge, Louisiana,” Weeks wrote on Instagram. “All I want to do is ball in the purple and gold. See you in September.”
Weeks’ decision had been expected internally, but it remains a major retention win for LSU. When healthy, Weeks is widely regarded as one of the nation’s top linebackers. He was a 2024 first-team All-SEC selection by both the Associated Press and the league’s coaches and earned SEC Defensive Player of the Year honors twice during that season.
The announcement also drew attention because Weeks is dating Kiffin’s daughter, Landry Kiffin, who is currently a sophomore at Ole Miss. After her father accepted the LSU job, she responded to online criticism with a TikTok post joking about “angry football fans,” a clip that quickly circulated.
Weeks’ 2025 season was limited by injury. He appeared in eight games, totaling 31 tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss, one sack and a fumble recovery. That production dipped from his standout 2024 campaign, when he recorded 125 tackles and filled the stat sheet across the board.
Now healthy, Weeks’ return gives Kiffin a proven defensive talent and one he’ll be coaching close to home as LSU looks ahead to 2026.
