‘Let me tell you something’: U.S. Congress sends clear threat to SEC over LSU decision

Lane Kiffin hasn’t been any less controversial as LSU’s head coach than he was at any other stop in his coaching career. Kiffin and LSU have sparked outrage for their pursuit of former NFL players on this year’s active roster.

The other members and powers that be in the SEC rallied against LSU’s plans, and even sought out the authority to remove LSU from the conference.

“The SEC filed an amendment to its federal lawsuit against LSU, Lane Kiffin and school officials on Tuesday, which seeks the authority for the SEC to expel LSU from the league. The SEC is not expected to take such action, but the filing indicates the seriousness of the league as it attempts to affirm the legal right to enforce its own rules. That was the point of the original federal suit filed last week,” ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported on X.

Waving the white flag

Ultimately, LSU backed down.

“NEWS: LSU football is adding two players to the school’s roster, which will complete it at 105 players, per ESPN sources. This will lock LSU’s roster for the rest of the year, which will eliminate the program’s ability to add Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris,” Thamel reported.

Although Kiffin and the Tigers determined it was in their best interests not to fan the flames any further, one U.S. Congressman is making it clear that there are no circumstances in which he’ll allow the SEC to push LSU out.

“I’ve got rocks in my driveway that are smarter than that,” Louisiana Senator John Kennedy said. “They’re not going to throw LSU out of the SEC. Let me tell you something, I and a lot of other people in the United States Congress will be on them like a hobo on a ham sandwich. LSU hasn’t done anything wrong. It’s called a court of law.”

As long as he’s winning, it’s all good

Kennedy has previously made it clear that he’ll give Kiffin room to operate however controversially he pleases, but that it’s all contingent on winning.

“Well, first, Coach Kiffin, I don’t know him,” Kennedy said in an interview. “Never met him. Didn’t hire him. Whoever his agent is, though, I want to— I want to hire his agent next time I go to buy a car because they gave him a— they gave him a Costco full of money.

“That’s none of my business. It is taxpayer money that makes it my business. And they say, well, no, it’s not. But it is directly. I’ll tell you how my people look about it. When he’s making this kind of money, he better win. Now, my folks are simple people. We like breakfast food and straight answers. There’s no spot in Louisiana that’s more than 17 steps away from a Waffle House. And my people don’t care what Lane Kiffin does.

“He can go hit on— he can go hit on Kristi Noem’s husband in a dark cocktail lounge. We don’t care as long as he wins, but he better win. And, and otherwise, I don’t know him.”

For his part, Kiffin is embracing the high expectations and is promising that he’ll deliver a national championship.

“I don’t know how fast it’s going to happen, but we’re going to win a national championship,” Kiffin said. “We’re going to have the teams and the rosters back to the way they were playing when they were great. I don’t know how fast. It might not be today, but it’s going to happen.
