Lincoln Riley, USC Trojans land a commitment from touted 2028 quarterback Trey Wright

Lincoln Riley carefully took his time to evaluate the 2028 quarterback crop before electing who to offer.

Last weekend, the Trojans made their move — offering touted 2028 Frisco (Texas) Lone Star quarterback Trey Wright.

A week later, USC landed its guy.

Wright gave a commitment to Riley and the Trojans on Saturday — within a week of landing the offer from USC.

“USC just felt like home for my family and me,” Wright told Rivals. “I have a lot of love and trust in Coach Riley, and I truly believe I can thrive and reach my full potential playing for him. I felt like the fit was right on and off the field, so when I knew USC was the place for me, I didn’t see a reason to wait.”

“I knew it was time to make it official,” Wright added on his timeline for a decision. “I just have a stronger feeling right now about where I’m meant to be.

The outstanding 2028 passer is the first domino to fall for USC in its 2028 recruiting class.

Wright has watched Riley recruit, develop, and mentor multiple Heisman Trophy winners and first-round draft picks.

This signal-caller from Texas is next in line.

“USC was definitely a big one for me,” Wright told Rivals. “Knowing Coach Riley is really selective with the QBs he offers and that I was his first in my class makes it really special … If Lincoln Riley calls you and you play quarterback, you have to listen. His track record with QBs speaks for itself, and then you add in everything USC is as a program; it’s definitely going to be a contender for me.”

As a sophomore last year, Wright led the nation in total yardage (5,860). He passed for 4,062 yards with 38 TDs against 7 INTs. He completed 67% of his passes and added another 1,764 yards rushing with 16 more TDs.

Wright also led Lone Star to the Class 5A UIL state championship game in his first season as the Rangers’ starter behind center.

Clemson was an early favorite in his recruitment. Missouri, SMU, Kentucky, Oregon, and others were also finalists for Wright.

The offer and opportunities in Los Angeles quickly grabbed his attention.

Wright needed a week’s time before locking in his commitment ahead of what should be an exciting junior campaign.

“He’s coached guys like Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray and Caleb Williams, who can make plays with their arm and also create when things break down, and I feel like that fits exactly how I play,” Wright said, on his commitment to the Trojans. “Getting a chance to be developed by him at a place like USC is definitely exciting.”

Wright ranks as the No. 23 QB in the 2028 and the No. 45 overall prospect from the Lone Star State in this recruiting cycle.
