In a year where the Texas offense was so bad, Steve Sarkisian’s play-calling was called into question, the Longhorns coach’s biggest offseason coaching change was defense. But Sark claims hiring Will Muschamp as his new defensive coordinator will help the offense too.
This week, Sark parted ways with defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski and hired former Texas DC Will Muschamp. After leaving Texas in the Mack Brown era, Muschamp has coached the Florida Gators, the South Carolina Gamecocks and was co-defensive coordinator at Georgia.

Sark says Muschamp’s time as a head coach is vital because Sark wants to completely hand the defense over to the the Georgia native.
“I think one thing that helps me with Will is his head coaching experience of having been in this conference with Florida and South Carolina,” Sarkisian said this week. “His experience of being under coach (Nike) Saban. You know, us speaking same language to where I feel very comfortable with Will being the head coach of that defense.”
Sark says Muschamp’s leadership will allow himself to totally focus on the offense and Arch Manning.
“And that allows me and frees up a little bit more time from an offensive perspective,” Sark said. “Instead of robbing Peter to pay Paul, I’m able to let him go do his thing on defense and really be a great leader and head coach over there. Which allows me to get back to doing the things that I believe I’m really good at.”
Sark implies that with Kwiatkowski as his DC, he had to spend too much time focusing on the defense and not enough time on offensive game-planning, play-calling and in-game adjustments.

“I don’t have to be on the defensive headset every single play of defense,” he said. “I can go talk to Arch. I can be with coach (A.J.) Milwee, coach (Kyle) Flood. … There’s some reasoning behind what we did to help, not only the defensive side of the ball, but actually help us offensively.”
