BATON ROUGE – The wait for a quarterback in this transfer portal class is finally over for LSU football fans.

Lane Kiffin and his offensive staff have landed Elon transfer quarterback Landen Clark out of the transfer portal Sunday night. Clark announced his commitment to LSU via his social media pages.

Quarterback has been the biggest need for the Tigers that went unaddressed for the first week of the current transfer portal window. That’s not due to a lack of Kiffin and LSU trying, as they have hosted Arizona State transfer QB Sam Leavitt and USC’s Husan Longstreet even more recently, things just didn’t materialize under Clark.

As a freshman, Clark was sensation for the Phoenix earning Colonial Athletic Association co-Offensive Rookie of the Year honors throwing for 2,321 yards, 18 touchdowns with eight interceptions. On the ground, he rushed for 614 yards and added 11 scores.

Why Landen Clark picked LSU football out of transfer portal

Clark was choosing between LSU, James Madison, Michigan and Kentucky out of the transfer portal. For the former Elon quarterback who visited LSU Saturday and Sunday, left Baton Rouge blown away by LSU’s program and how Kiffin’s offensive system works.

He entered the portal betting on himself to afford himself an opportunity to play at the highest level of college football. And he liked what LSU had to offer him best in terms of matching up with SEC competition.

How Landen Clark will fit LSU football’s roster

Before Clark’s commitment, LSU had zero scholarship quarterbacks on roster. Clark fill the biggest void on the Tigers’ roster to date. LSU plans to sign another quarterback after Clark.

And whether LSU ends up signing Leavitt or Longstreet or another signal caller, Clark is gifted enough to challenge whomever it is for the starting role but obviously more like he’ll be in a backup role. But Kiffin and his offensive staff are thrilled for what he brings to the position room.

LSU football transfer targets

  • Ole Miss wide receiver Winston Watkins Jr.
  • USC quarterback Husan Longstreet
  • Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt
  • Alabama offensive lineman Micah DeBose
  • North Carolina State wide receiver Terrell Anderson
  • California-Davis running back Carter Vargas
  • McNeese State cornerback Javon Davis

When does transfer portal close?

The NCAA transfer portal window closes Jan. 16. Players cannot enter their name in the portal following that date. But those whose name is already in the transfer portal can still decide and sign with a new school after Jan. 16.
