BATON ROUGE – Work needed to be done along the defensive front for LSU football when this transfer portal window opened up. It’s been a slow grind through the first week of the portal cycle but Lane Kiffin and his defensive staff are turning up the heat.
LSU added a commitment from Auburn sophomore defensive lineman Malik Blocton on Thursday, Jan 8. Blocton announced the move via his social media pages. He has two years of eligibility left.
Blocton is the second defensive lineman LSU has brought in through the transfer portal, joining Clemson transfer Stephiylan Green. In total, Kiffin and his staff are now up to 12 players out of the portal.
At Auburn, Blocton recorded 33 tackles, including 8.5 tackles for loss and two sacks, over the course of his two seasons there. He started eight games in 2025.
Why DL Malik Blocton picked LSU football out of transfer portal
Auburn has endured a coaching change this offseason as Hugh Freeze was fired following the season and new head coach Alex Golesh did not retain any of Auburn’s defensive coaches. Blocton was looking for a fresh start and LSU is a great place for him to do so.
Blocton was being courted out of the portal by a number of Power Four programs, including Alabama and a couple other SEC programs but LSU ended up winning out the battle.
How Malik Blocton will fit LSU football’s roster
Not only will LSU provide him the new start, but there is ample opportunity for the 6-3, 291-pounder to come in and push for not only playing time but a starting role right away.
The Tigers are thin in numbers and experience along the defensive line and with his having played in big time games in the SEC before, Blocton will have an inside road to seeing the field early and often in Baton Rouge.
LSU football transfer targets
- Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt
- Washington quarterback Demond Williams
- Penn State edge rusher Chaz Coleman
- North Carolina State wide receiver Terrell Anderson
- California-Davis running back Carter Vargas
- McNeese State cornerback Javon Davis
When does transfer portal close?
The NCAA transfer portal window closes Jan. 16. Players cannot enter their name in the portal following that date. But those whose name is already in the transfer portal can still decide and sign with a new school after Jan. 16.
