LSU football lost a recruiting battle to Wisconsin, missing out on a blue-chip defensive back. Mekhi Williams gave his word to the Badgers despite a late push from LSU.

Williams decommitted from Florida State at the end of May. Following the decommitment, some labeled LSU as the favorite for the four-star safety, but Luke Fickell and Wisconsin got the final word.

Per the Rivals Industry Rankings, Williams is the No. 179-ranked prospect in the 2027 class. He ranks No. 14 at his position and No. 19 in the state of Florida.

LSU typically has good luck recruiting defensive backs in the Sunshine State. LSU secondary coach Corey Raymond has previously dipped into Florida for elite players like Patrick Peterson and DJ Pickett. LSU just couldn’t finish the deal with Williams.

It wasn’t a good week for LSU on the recruiting trail. Along with the Williams miss, LSU watched a five-star defensive end flip to Miami after being committed to LSU for months. Still, Lane Kiffin and the Tigers expect to sign a top-10 class when it’s all said and done.
