As Washington Commanders star Jayden Daniels and his team have taken legal action against the LSU football program for the use of the No. 5, which the quarterback used when he was at the school, head coach Lane Kiffin gave his thoughts on the matter. With drama now between the LSU football team and Daniels, Kiffin’s stance is that he’s seemingly not going to back down.

At the center of this situation is Tigers cornerback DJ Pickett, who will wear No. 5 with the team, which is the first time the number has been used since Daniels became the school’s third Heisman Trophy winner. With Daniels’ side saying his name, image, and likeness (NIL) can’t be used, though the number wasn’t retired by LSU, this action has been ongoing.

Kiffin would speak to the media and say that the No. 5 was promised to Pickett when he was recruited to play with the Tigers before. While Kiffin said he’s “not going to get into that,” likely referencing the Daniels situation, he says Pickett will wear the number.

“DJ is in [No.] 5, and that was a situation that was promised to him in recruiting here, for him to sign here,” Kiffin said. “I’ve done a lot of research on that with the family and the representatives and the people, so really I didn’t have a decision to make. It was promised to the kid. It wasn’t done for whatever [reason]. I’m not going to get into that.”

“I’m not going to judge something [that was done] when I wasn’t here,” Kiffin continued. “But when a kid is promised something to come to a school, he should wear it.”

At any rate, it remains to be seen how the dispute will be resolved.
