Another former Ole Miss football assistant is officially heading to Baton Rouge. Kevin Smith will follow Lane Kiffin to LSU football. He will be the associate head coach and running backs coach, a role he held in Oxford.

Smith was reportedly Kiffin's top target for the position. On Sunday, reports stated a deal was close. Smith was also seen at LSU football ops with the rest of Kiffin's offensive staff.

Smith spent five years total with the Rebels and made an immediate impact upon arrival in 2020. They led the SEC with 210.6 yards per game and the following year, three Ole Miss running backs finished the season ranked in the top 25 of the SEC in total rushing yards. In 2024, the ball carriers set program records with 7.3 yards per play and 6,845 total yards.

Over his tenure in Oxford, Smith mentored Quinshon Judkins and Kewan Lacy. Smith came to Ole Miss from Florida Atlantic when Kiffin made the jump to the SEC, spending three seasons in Boca Raton and surpassing 2,000 rushing yards each year. He developed Devin Singletary in his record-setting career with the Owls.

LSU's running back room experienced inconsistencies over the last two seasons. Caden Durham and Harlem Berry are both slated to return.
