Though Lane Kiffin and LSU football have a few years and dozens of games to get there, the Tigers have been confirmed for at least one neutral-site nonconference game for the 2029 college football season.
LSU will visit AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Sept. 1, 2029, to take on ACC opponent Southern Methodist. SMU football’s official account on X (formerly Twitter) announced the game on Thursday, Feb. 12, while also announcing a neutral-site meeting with Oklahoma. The Mustangs will first play the Sooners in 2027 before LSU visits AT&T Stadium in 2029.

“Playing Oklahoma in 2027 and LSU in 2029 at AT&T Stadium reflects both where SMU Football has been and where it is going,” Damon Evans, SMU athletics director, said in a statement. “These games evoke our historic presence on the national stage, including the Pony Express era, while delivering meaningful opportunities for revenue generation, brand visibility, and partner engagement in direct support of the vision of Mustang Partners and our continued growth in the ACC.”
The visit to AT&T Stadium will be the Tigers’ first since the opening of the 2018 college football season, when first-year Ohio State transfer quarterback Joe Burrow led No. 24 LSU to a 33-17 victory over No. 8 Miami.
It also continues a recent trend of the Tigers playing in regular-season neutral games. Since that 2018 game at AT&T Stadium, LSU has played season-openers at neutral sites in 2022 (24-23 loss to Florida State in Caesars Superdome); in 2023 (45-24 loss to FSU in Camping World Stadium); and in 2024 (27-20 loss to USC in Allegiant Stadium).
The Tigers will look to get back in the win column after losing their last three neutral-site games, and will have an opportunity to do so before taking on SMU in AT&T Stadium. The Tigers in 2027 will travel to Houston to take on the Cougars in what is technically a neutral-site game at NRG Stadium, home of the Houston Texans NFL franchise.
That meeting could also represent an opportunity for the Tigers to get even with the Mustangs, assuming they don’t meet prior to the 2029 opener. LSU trails SMU 0-1-1 all time in series history, falling 51-0 in 1922 and tying the Mustangs 14-14 in 1934.
