TheLSU football program is currently gearing up for the 2026 college football season, which is slated to get underway in early September. The Tigers will be led this year by head coach Lane Kiffin, who left the same post with the Ole Miss Rebels to join LSU in controversial fashion before last season ended.

This year, the LSU quarterback figures to be Sam Leavitt, who transferred over from Arizona State and will take over for Garrett Nussmeier, who is now a member of the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL.

Recently, college football insider Joel Klatt revealed his top quarterbacks for the upcoming season, and Leavitt just snuck into the top ten.

“Leavitt kicks off Klatt’s list of quarterbacks going into the 2026 season. Coming off an injury, there are certainly questions about the Arizona State transfer. Still, there’s a lot to like about a guy who led the Sun Devils to the CFP in 2024 and is now in Lane Kiffin’s system. When he was healthy, Leavitt had 2,885 yards, 24 touchdowns, six interceptions, a 61.7% completion percentage, 443 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns two years ago,” noted the publication.

Leavitt will hope to follow in the footsteps of the last two national championship quarterbacks, Fernando Mendoza and Will Howard, each of whom transferred into their schools and led them to national championship wins once they got there. As Klatt mentioned, Leavitt already has some playoff experience, having led Arizona State to the game’s biggest stage two years ago, and will hope to bring a similar level of success to Kiffin’s offense in Baton Rouge.

In any case, the LSU football season will kick off on September 5 against Clemson.
