LSU football added one of its biggest recruiting wins of the 2027 cycle Thursday when four-star safety Greedy James flipped his commitment from Texas to the Tigers.

James, a 6-foot-1, 175-pound defensive back from Manvel High School in Texas, committed to the Longhorns in December 2025. Rivals ranks him among the nation’s top prospects, making his decision a major boost for LSU’s future secondary and another setback for a conference rival.

The flip also reinforces LSU’s push to rebuild its defensive back pipeline under Lane Kiffin. Corey Raymond played a major role throughout the process, while the Tigers leaned on James’ Louisiana ties and his relationship with the staff to gain traction after his long Texas pledge.

On3Sports’ and Rivals’ Hayes Fawcett shared the commitment news on X, formerly Twitter, confirming the safety had flipped his commitment.

“BREAKING: Four-Star Safety Greedy James has Flipped his Commitment from Texas to LSU, he tells me for @Rivals
The 6’1 175 S had been Committed to the Longhorns since December”

The move carries weight because LSU pulled a Top 100 defensive back away from Texas after roughly seven months of commitment. James’ change came after the summer official visit period, giving the Tigers a timely recruiting surge as the 2027 class continues to take shape.

For the Tigers football program, the addition fits a familiar identity. LSU has long produced elite defensive backs, and landing the Texas native gives the Tigers another highly regarded safety to build around. The move also helps Kiffin’s staff address a clear need for rangy back-end defenders in future SEC matchups against explosive offenses.

If Kiffin and LSU continue stacking blue-chip defensive talent, Thursday’s flip could stand as one of the program’s most significant recruiting moments of the current cycle. It also gives Kiffin’s staff another statement win as the Tigers try to turn recruiting momentum into long-term SEC depth.
