The Ole Miss Rebels' season came to an end on Thursday night, falling to Miami at the Fiesta Bowl in the semifinal round of the College Football Playoff. For Ole Miss, it marked the end of an unprecedented, drama-filled season.
Former Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin departed Oxford to take the LSU football head coaching job at the end of the regular season. Kiffin wanted to coach the playoff, but Ole Miss AD Keith Carter didn't see eye-to-eye with Kiffin. Carter didn't want Kiffin to coach the CFP only to leave for a division rival. If Kiffin was leaving, Carter wanted him out.
Kiffin's exit led to the promotion of defensive coordinator Pete Golding — not as interim, but as Ole Miss's new full-time head football coach.
The College Football Playoff is one heck of a place to make your head coaching debut, but that's the spot Golding found himself in.
Ole Miss began its run with an emphatic Round 1 win over Tulane and followed it up with one of the biggest wins in program history, upsetting Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. That left Ole Miss one win away from a national championship game appearance on Thursday. The Rebels came up just short with Miami taking the lead in the final moments.
Many hypothesized how Kiffin was feeling throughout Ole Miss's run. He was watching the team he built and coached play for a title. He took to social media to share a quick reaction after the win.

"Amazing effort and grit," Kiffin wrote on social media, "best season ever in the history of Ole Miss!!"
Kiffin added a blue heart to his post and wrote, "love guys."
Amazing effort and grit. @OleMissFB 😢 best season ever in the history of Ole Miss!!

Kiffin also took a moment to claim pass interference on Ole Miss's last-ditch attempt to win the game as the clock wound down.
Pass interference 💯!!! https://t.co/99jrGosJ5w

Still, despite Kiffin's public support for Ole Miss, it will probably fall on deaf ears with Rebels fans. Many Ole Miss fans have made their feelings clear on Kiffin over the last two months, despite Kiffin being one of the most successful coaches in program history.
LSU will travel to face Ole Miss on Sept. 19, 2026.
