The LSU Tigers are under new leadership with Lane Kiffin and his staff taking over. While the transfer portal was a major focal point earlier in the offseason, focus has begun to shift to high school recruiting.
LSU’s 2027 recruiting class is far from complete. So far, Kiffin has landed just two commitments from four-star EDGE Jaiden Bryant and four-star quarterback Peyton Houston. It’s a long way from matching the Tigers’ 2026 cycle, which ranks 12th in the nation.
Kiffin is looking to make some big additions, with running back Nigel Newkirk emerging as a top priority. At 5-foot-11 and 185 pounds, he is a four-star recruit, the No. 6 running back and the No. 89 player in the nation, per Rivals.
As a junior at Gainesville High School, he rushed for 1,496 yards and 19 touchdowns on 184 carries. Newkirk also hauled in 12 receptions for 128 yards and one touchdown.
Unfortunately for LSU, back in November, he revealed a list of his top five schools, including the Michigan Wolverines, Georgia Bulldogs, Alabama Crimson Tide, Miami Hurricanes and Florida State Seminoles. However, since then, the Tigers have made a strong impression.
Newkirk updated his list of final schools, making several changes. While the Seminoles were bumped out, the Tigers and Ohio State Buckeyes were added in. LSU is now firmly in the mix to land his commitment.
LSU did not land a single running back out of high school in the 2026 cycle. That makes landing a player as productive and highly ranked as Newkirk crucial to ensure the position replenishes itself with talent.
