News broke on Monday morning that Florida Gators quarterback DJ Lagway would be entering the transfer portal when it opens on January 2. Shortly after, the LSU Tigers were listed among the teams to watch by On3's Pete Nakos.
Lagway was the No. 3 player in the country in his recruiting class. Above stars like Ryan Willians and Julian Sayin. He was the top quarterback in his class and the best player out of Texas. He was a target of the Tigers out of high school, but pretty much every school wanted him.
The 20-year-old has not had the start to his college career that many had envisioned, but he has at least had flashes.
Through two seasons with the Gators, he completed 62% of his passes for 4,179 yards with 28 touchdowns and 23 interceptions. Five of those interceptions came during Florida's 20-10 loss to LSU earlier this season.
Despite the early struggles, Lagway is still going to be a sought-after player in this transfer cycle. 247Sports' initial rankings have him tied with former Nebraska Cornhuskers star Dylan Raiola and behind Cincinnati Bearcats standout Brendan Sorsby; the three make up the best options currently in the portal.
Tigers head coach Lane Kiffin reposted the initial report of Lagway entering the transfer portal, which could either mean nothing or everything. It's a bit of the twitter troll side of Kiffin that LSU fans are going to need to get used to .
It would make sense for the Tigers to make a push for Lagway, given the current state of their quarterback room. Garrett Nussmeier is out of eligibility, which will leave Michael Van Buren Jr. and Colin Hurley as the only two quarterbacks on the roster.
Hurley has yet to attempt a pass in college and left the team over the last few weeks of the season, which could put him as a transfer portal possibility. Van Buren had some flashes over the last couple of weeks, but underperformed overall.
Kiffin will be searching wide for his next quarterback. Lagway will at least come up in conversations.
The Texas native is still a fantastic athlete and has tools that coaches want, but the Gators did a poor job of developing him. There should still be some talent left to unlock, which is why he is still such a high-ranking player.
There's no signs pointing towards LSU going all in to get him, but expect his name to pop up in conversations over the next few weeks. He is a real option for them.
