When the LSU Tigers brought Lane Kiffin in as their new head coach, one of the first orders of business was securing Charlie Weis Jr. as the offensive coordinator. Much to the chagrin of the Ole Miss Rebels, they did just that.
Weis will return to the Rebels to coach the in the College Football Playoff, but will return to the Tigers after that, along with a couple other Ole Miss assistants.
Knowing that the Rebels want to keep Weis for next year, LSU has reportedly worked out a new deal with the coach with a higher salary and non-compete clause to make sure that his return actually happens.
Wilson Alexander of The Advocatereported on Wednesday afternoon that Weis' new deal will be three years for $7.5 million. There is also supposedly a "look-in period" each year that will allow for adjustments to ensure that Weis remains the highest-paid offensive coordinator in the SEC.
The Tigers went all-in to secure Kiffin's offensive partner for the next few years. The 32-year-old will likely eventually be a head coach of his own at some point in the future, but should be content as a top-paid coordinator for a while.
Kiffin and Weis first worked together on the Alabama Crimson Tide staff back in 2015. They've been together at every stop since then as well. He's clearly a big part of what Kiffin does on offense.
Given that the offense is going to be the calling card of his era, it makes sense that LSU doesn't want to risk anything.
