LSU football began spring practice and head coach Lane Kiffin met with the media on Tuesday. Kiffin was asked about a change to college football in 2026 — the lack of a spring transfer portal window.

In prior years, there was a portal window in the winter and after spring practice. This year, whatever your roster is after the first portal window, you're stuck with it.

Kiffin had mixed thoughts about the change.

"I was kind of in a unique spot of where I was viewing it and I said okay for the betterment of college football definitely one window was the way to go most of the coaches were adamant about it and I said but if you want to talk about making your roster the best especially in the SEC the two windows was better," Kiffin said.

Kiffin said coaches complained about the second portal window because it was a chance for players to re-leverage and ask for more money. However, that had its benefits to SEC schools. Kiffin said SEC rosters improved as the conference took good players from elsewhere in the country in the spring portal window.

It makes sense — most SEC programs can afford to pay to retain players in the spring while lesser programs can't afford to extend their stars again. Kiffin mentioned Ole Miss QB Trinidad Chambliss, who was a spring addition for his Rebels last spring.

LSU fans will remember the spring additions of AJ Haulcy and Bernard Gooden, who were both impact players on LSU's defense in 2025.

Luckily, it appears LSU doesn't have much need for a spring portal window, given all the talent LSU signed in December and January. LSU's transfer portal class was ranked as the best in the nation, headlined by quarterback Sam Leavitt and offensive tackle Jordan Seaton.
