STARKVILLE — Mississippi State football quarterback Luke Kromenhoek plans to enter the transfer portal, according to a report from On3 on Dec. 18.
The portal opens Jan. 2, the same day the Bulldogs (5-7) will play Wake Forest (8-4) in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Kromenhoek is slated to be MSU’s second-string quarterback behind Kamario Taylor for the bowl game. According to the report, he will stay with the team and participate in the bowl game.
“It really is specific to who it is,” coach Jeff Lebby said on Dec. 10 about if outgoing transfers will play in the bowl game. “As we got here and back in the building on Monday, we were on the grass this morning. There was nobody that was on the grass this morning that had decided to go in and enter the portal or announced they were planning on doing it. I think some of those things will come up, but it will be case-by-case. That’s college football right now.”
Kromenhoek, a sophomore, transferred to Mississippi State this season from Florida State and competed with Taylor for the second-string job behind starter Blake Shapen. Taylor ultimately won the job, and then became MSU’s starter in the regular season finale against Ole Miss.
Shapen is not with the team for the bowl.
Kromenhoek, a Savannah, Georgia native, has played in two games this season, completing two passes for 20 yards and rushing for 24 yards and one touchdown. He was a four-star in the 2024 recruiting class and made two starts as a freshman at Florida State.
Kromenhoek is the 22nd MSU player to announce their plans to transfer. None of them were starters this season.
How Luke Kromenhoek transfer impacts Mississippi State’s QBs in 2026
Taylor is expected to be Mississippi State’s starter next season, meaning Kromenhoek would’ve been a backup again. Shapen is out of eligiblity.
The Bulldogs may need to add another backup quarterback in the transfer portal. Only two other quarterbacks besides Taylor are slated to be on the 2026 roster: Brodie McWhorter and Parker Puckett. McWhorter is an incoming three-star freshman, while Puckett is a walk-on who’ll be a sophomore.
