Major College Football Head Coach Predicted to Reject NFL Offer

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish had an anti-climactic ending to its 2025 college football season, as despite finishing the year 10-2 they were left out of the College Football Playoff.

In a hard-scratching decision, the committee bounced the Fighting Irish out of the top 12 despite keeping them ranked in the top 10 for weeks. As a result, Notre Dame opted out of the Pop-Tart Bowl, and are focused on preparing for the upcoming opening of the college football transfer portal.

Amid the preparation for the 2026 college football season, Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman has been reported to be a candidate for the New York Giants head coaching vacancy. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo revealed that Freeman will be the Giants’ top candidate among college prospects, but college football personality Josh Pate revealed on X that he thinks it ends there.

“I expect Marcus Freeman to listen and I also expect Marcus Freeman to be the head coach at Notre Dame next season,” wrote Pate on X.

Despite Notre Dame being his first head coaching role, Freeman has quickly emerged as one of the brightest minds in college football. He has posted a 43-12 record in five years, and even led the Fighting Irish to the national championship game last season.

It isn’t too shocking that he has drawn NFL interest, but he has shown no signs of wanting to leave Notre Dame as he shut down the possibility for other major college football jobs such as Penn State and Florida.

Ultimately, the Giants’ interest may result in him getting an extension, but until then, one of college football’s most knowledgeable insiders doesn’t foresee him budging.
