Pamela Warner says the agreement will direct the majority of the late actor’s estate to his 9-year-old granddaughter, pending court approval, after a public legal battle with widow Tenisha Warner.
Following weeks of headlines surrounding Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s estate, the late actor’s mother says the family has reached a resolution.
Pamela Warner, who has been embroiled in a legal dispute with her daughter-in-law, Tenisha Warner, over the late actor’s estate, broke her silence this week, announcing that the parties have agreed to a settlement that now awaits court approval.
In a statement shared with PEOPLE, Pamela Warner pushed back on the narrative that she was attempting to withhold financial support from Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s widow and their 9-year-old daughter.
“Recent claims that Pamela sought to prevent her granddaughter from receiving financial support are untrue,” the statement says. “Malcolm was thoughtful and deliberate in his estate planning to include all his loved ones. While the trust at issue is in favor of Pamela, his father, and his sister, Malcolm provided for his wife and daughter separate and apart from that trust to the tune of millions of dollars.”
According to Pamela Warner, the agreement ensures that the majority of her son’s estate will go to his daughter while also preserving the relationship between grandmother and granddaughter.
“The agreement provides for Malcolm’s daughter to receive the majority remainder of the Trust and Estate,” the statement continues. “The Settlement also memorializes that it is in the best interest of Malcolm’s daughter to have a relationship with her grandmother, Pamela.”
The statement concludes, “Pamela remains hopeful that all parties will support the resolution and that her granddaughter will receive the full benefit of Malcolm’s legacy without further delay.”
The statement marks a notable shift after Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s widow filed a lawsuit last month against the actor’s mother, who serves as trustee of the Warner Family Trust.
Tenisha Warner alleged she was owed more than $1.2 million under the terms of the couple’s 2022 premarital agreement, including a $1 million life insurance policy that she says Malcolm-Jamal Warner intended to secure but never finalized before his death. She also claimed she was owed additional payments outlined in the agreement, including compensation for serving as his chief of staff and contributions to her retirement account.
Pamela Warner’s statement comes just days after a close friend launched a GoFundMe campaign for Tenisha Warner and the couple’s 9-year-old daughter. The fundraiser says Malcolm-Jamal Warner had been working with attorneys to update his estate plan before his death but died before the changes could be finalized. It also alleges Tenisha has faced mounting financial pressure while grieving her husband and rebuilding the family’s home after unexpected flooding.
Malcolm-Jamal Warner, beloved for his role as Theo Huxtable on “The Cosby Show,” died in July 2025 at age 54 after accidentally drowning while vacationing with his family in Costa Rica. His death prompted an outpouring of tributes celebrating a career that spanned more than four decades in television, film, music and spoken word.
