Notre Dame might be in jeopardy of losing head coach Marcus Freeman to the NFL.
Freeman has been outstanding for the Fighting Irish since taking over the program in 2022, owning a 43-12 record. Last season, Notre Dame made it to the national championship game in large part because of its head coach. That being said, his success has placed him on NFL teams' radars.
“Everybody has eyes on Marcus,” Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua said. “College has eyes on Marcus; NFL has eyes on Marcus. I bet Hollywood has eyes on Marcus. … He’s the absolute best coach in the country for Notre Dame, full stop, one of the greatest college coaches in the country.”
While there's no guarantee Freeman is ready to leave South Bend for the NFL, he's been mentioned as a candidate for the New York Giants. In fact, ESPN reporter Jordan Raanan believes the G-Men will hire Freeman this upcoming offseason.
“I’m going out on a limb here,” Raanan said. “Here’s what you’re hearing when talking to people – he [Freeman] is going to be part of the mix.”
Would Freeman take the job?
Earlier this month, Freeman was asked about the rumors linking him to the NFL. Although he didn't say if he'd actually consider leaving Notre Dame, he expressed gratitude for the Giants.
"Well, I think the gratitude you have for being mentioned by an organization like that. I have a lot of respect for all NFL teams, but the history of the Giants is tremendous," Freeman said. "It reminds me of the honor I have to be in the position I'm in. You wouldn't have said that statement if I didn't have this job and we weren't having success. It's a reminder for me that the people in our program, the work they put in results in an output that's successful."
Freeman continued, "I use it as a reminder to be grateful for what I have. If you're not grateful for it, I often say you're going to lose it."
As of now, BetOnline has Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley as the odds-on favorite (+300) to coach the Giants. Freeman isn't far behind him at +400.
