Miami saw a player they recently had on campus announce his commitment elsewhere.

Things have gone swimmingly for Mario Cristobal this offseason on the recruiting front. The Miami Hurricanes have put together one of the strongest recruiting classes in the country for the 2027 cycle.

Cristobal has flipped multiple five-star recruits, including former Georgia CB Donte Wright (Long Beach, CA), and holds three-plus five-star recruits in both 247 Sports and On3 Sports/Rivals’ composite rankings. The Hurricanes hold the No. 3 class in the nation in On3/Rivals and No. 4 in 247 Sports.

However, one area where the Hurricanes could use a bit more oomph is at tight end. As things stand, the Canes have 19 total commitments in their 2027 class. They have one tight end committed – Fort Lauderdale (Cardinal Gibbons) TE Demarcus Deroche.

They had the chance to add to that on Sunday, when four-star TE Anthony Cartwright III made has announcement. Unfortunately for the Canes, he picked Cristobal’s old school: the Oregon Ducks.

4-star TE Anthony Cartwright III picks Oregon over Miami

Cartwright, from Detroit, Michigan (Detroit Day School) is a consensus four-star recruit, but he doesn’t rank highly on the national boards of most services. Still, he had the attention of a slew of big name programs. In addition to Miami and Oregon, Cartwright held offers from Ohio State, LSU, Michigan, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Penn State, Ole Miss, Florida, and many others.

Miami managed to get Cartwright on campus back on June 5, when they served as host a who’s who of big name recruits on official visits. Cartwright was one of the few uncommitted recruits on the visit, and Miami pushed hard. But in the end, absent another flip, the Canes will come up short.

We’ll see if Miami can get back on Cartwright’s radar before early signing day in December, or if they’ll pivot elsewhere to fill a clear need at a position where they’ve churned out NFL talent over the years.
