Alex Marsteller provided 198 yards and one touchdown on the ground and Rose-Hulman earned a shutout win over the Anderson Ravens by a 38-0 score Saturday afternoon at Cook Stadium.
The win improved the Engineers to records of 3-6 overall and 3-2 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.
One week after gaining 203 yards rushing against Manchester, Marsteller had another outstanding performance that also included three catches for 56 yards and a receiving TD.
Quarterback Adam Yue put together an impressive performance, going 9 for 18 with 163 yards passing and two touchdowns through the air. Joseph Alexion was the top receiver with three catches for 67 yards.
The Engineers' defense was led by Rudy Griffing with six tackles and 2.0 tackles-for-loss. William Fleck also made an impact defensively with three tackles, 2.0 tackles-for-loss and 2.0 sacks.
The game started slowly with both teams struggling offensively. Rose was able to strike first, putting together a seven-play, 33-yard drive that ended in a 31-yard field goal by Trevor Saguto.
The Engineers would strike again on a gutsy play on fourth-and-3 from the Anderson 21-yard line. Yue connected with Ben Klein, who evaded defenders all the way to the end zone for a 21-yard score, to extend the Rose-Hulman lead to 10-0.
Marsteller built the Rose lead once more, after finishing a three-play, 67-yard drive with a 34-yard TD reception from Yue to make the score 17-0.
As the half was coming to an end, the Engineers' special-teams unit was able to make an impact. After driving down the field, Anderson was set up for a 52-yard field-goal attempt with one second remaining on the clock. The attempt was blocked by William Fleck and returned by Antonio Barnes 55 yards for a touchdown. This made the score 24-0 at halftime.
Rose-Hulman controlled the pace in the second half to protect its lead. Marsteller earned his second touchdown of the day on a 66-yard rush to make the score 31-0 with 2:43 remaining in the third quarter.
The Engineers put together a long drive in the fourth quarter to run the clock. The team finished a 15-play, 66-yard drive that took up 10 minutes and 28 seconds with a 1-yard touchdown rush by Aiden Lanham. This was the first career score for the freshman running back and sealed the shutout victory.
Rose will return to action for Senior Day against the Mount St. Joseph Lions at 1:30 p.m. next Saturday at Cook Stadium. Both teams will compee for a chance to play in the Division III Football Bowl Series at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio.
