Maryland just can’t get this thing going.
It started 4-0, was competitive in a slew of tough losses, and then Indiana happened. That was bad, getting rocked by Rutgers was worse, and if there’s a loss to the Illini, it has to beat both Michigan and Michigan State to get to six wins.
Illinois pulled up out of its two-game nosedive with an easy win over Rutgers, and with Wisconsin and Northwestern still to go, there’s a shot at a ten-win season after the bowl game.

Why Maryland Will Win
Maryland’s offensive line normally doesn’t do anything for the ground game, but it continues to give young quarterback star Malik Washington plenty of time to work.
He didn’t do anything through the air in the loss to Rutgers, but he took off for 164 yards, the running game had the best day of the year by a mile, and now Illinois has to worry about keeping the Maryland ground game from hitting the home run.
Even through all of the losing, the Terps are taking the ball away. They’ve forced multiple takeaways in three of the last four games and nine times over the last three games.
The Illini reigned it in against Rutgers two weeks ago, but the turnovers against Ohio State and Washington were a killer.

Why Illinois Will Win
Illinois quarterback Luke Altmyer is about to go off. The big passing days have stalled a bit over the last few games, but he’s been effective.
The Maryland defense is getting hammered lately, allowing over 400 yards of total offense over each of the last four games.
The Illini are coming off their best running day of the year – rumbling all over Rutgers two weeks ago – and they’ll start with that to set up Altmyer.
The Terp pass rush is great, and it’ll get to Altmyer a few times, but he’ll make up for it with well over 200 yards and at least two scores. The Terps have to keep up, but …

Maryland is way overdue to have a few breaks go the right way.
It hasn’t been good at creating its own good fortune, and on the flip side, the turnovers have been a killer. Illinois hasn’t forced a takeaway over the last three games.
The Illini will win – they’re rested, and they’ll look and play like it – but there will be way too much sweating until midway through the fourth quarter when the defense forces one big play to take full control.
