Rutgers goes to Ohio State next and closes with Penn State. If it wins, it could beat the Nittany Lions, but lose, and good luck getting by the Buckeyes to stay alive for six wins.
The Terps started 4-0, lost their last four, and even after three painfully close defeats, it seemed like all was okay. But Indiana dropped a 55-10 on the board, and now there’s a problem.
They can and should beat Michigan State to close, but with a trip to Illinois next and Michigan to follow, beating Rutgers would be a big deal.

Why Maryland Will Win
Rutgers has to throw really, really well to win.
The Scarlet Knight defense hasn’t shown up this year, and the ground game has been solid – the four wins all came on the four best running games of the season – but it starts by completing passes.
Rutgers is 4-0 when hitting 65% or more of its passes, 0-5 when it doesn’t, and it’s because the entire tone of the team feeds off the rhythm of the offense.
Maryland is 4-1 when allowing teams to hit fewer than 65%, but its own attack should dictate the tempo.

Why Rutgers Will Win
Maryland doesn’t have a running game.
It’s one of the strange quirks of the season. Washington has gone through his freshman growing pains, and he’s good, but the solid offensive front doesn’t generate any sort of a push.
Maryland has only hit four yards per carry once this season, five of the seven rushing scores came against Towson and Nebraska, and the Rutgers run D could use a serious break.
The other strange thing about the Terps is their ability to melt down late in close games. They need takeaways, but outside of the Oregon blowout loss, Rutgers doesn’t turn the ball over. As long as they can keep it close …
Maryland vs Rutgers Prediction, Betting Lines
Neither team has a decent win. Between the teams, there are two FCS wins, three against the MAC, a Florida Atlantic thrown in there, Purdue, and Wisconsin. Something has to give.
Three of the four Maryland losses this year were by four points or fewer in games they should’ve won, and Rutgers just pulled the 27-24 victory over Purdue out of the fire.
Rutgers is at home, but Maryland is better. It should make for a solid under-the-radar afternoon game.
