Mason Heintschel had led Pitt football back into its Friday night game against Virginia Tech following two rough drives to begin the night on offense.
If the Panthers are able to complete the come-from-behind victory on the road, they may need to do it without their star sophomore quarterback.
Heintschel stayed down on the ground after getting hit on the sidelines as he was going out of bounds at the end of a quarterback scramble, which came up just shy of a first down for the Panthers and sent the ESPN broadcast into a commercial break.
Here's the latest on Heintschel's injury:
Mason Heintschel injury updates
Heintschel sustained an apparent leg injury at the end of a quarterback scramble during Pitt's opening drive to the second half at Virginia Tech.
Coming out of a commercial break, ESPN's broadcast showed Heintschel being helped to the Panthers locker room with his arms around two members of Pitt's medical staff, and said it could hear his anguish from the medical tent. He went to the locker room shortly after.
The ESPN broadcast said Heintschel would be questionable to return.
Who is Pitt's backup quarterback?
After Heintschel's exit, he was replaced by Holden Geriner. Pitt capped off the drive with a touchdown to take the lead in the third quarter.
