Matt Campbell Not Content With One Area in Penn State's Win vs. Marshall

Penn State came away with an easy win last Saturday against Marshall, something that didn't come as much of a surprise. Marshall is a decent program, so Penn State walking away with a 45-0 win should be viewed as a step in the right direction for Matt Campbell and his staff in their first game.

At the same time, it's always important to dissect games beyond the basic stats. As we look at what some guys did, Rocco Becht threw for 271 yards and four touchdowns, and Koby Howard had a career day with 161 yards and six receptions, including a touchdown.

In terms of running the football, Penn State is typically one of the best in the country in terms of its run game. On Saturday, however, while the team still ran for 163 yards, it didn't feel as strong as it typically is. Carson Hansen led the way with 11 carries for 48 yards, and no other running back had more than 3.9 yards per carry against a below-average defense.

Speaking to reporters about it, Campbell understands it's an area his team has to improve.

"I felt like that was something that in a way opened up the passing game early. We felt like that was going to have to happen early in the football game to kind of get us going.

"That's certainly not to say we can't be cleaner or need to be cleaner in the running game. I thought there were times we fell off blocks. Sometimes it's always on the O-line. We have to remember the way we play, man, that's the tight end position, that's at receiver. There were opportunities there for some big, big hits, and we just didn't make the most of them,” he said, per Penn Live.

In my opinion, for Penn State to be the team that it is looking to be, the run game has to be figured out.

I'm curious to see who will get the bulk of the stats throughout the season, as Penn State has many questions it will have to answer in that regard. I do like James Peoples; at least I think he has a chance to be the guy, but that's ultimately something the Nittany Lions have to figure out.
