Matt Trumbly resigns as University football coach after 1 season

University head football coach Matt Trumbly resigned from his position on Wednesday, Nov. 5, the school announced in a press release.

“Coach Trumbly has been a vital part of our athletic program since the school opened,” University athletic director Staci Hahn said in the release. “His willingness to assist in any capacity, his hands-on approach, and his unwavering commitment to our students and athletes have made a lasting impact. We are deeply grateful for his service and leadership.”

Trumbly served as an assistant coach for 11 years before getting hired to lead the program on Feb. 13. His reign as head coach ended after one season, as University lost its last nine games to finish 1-9 for its worst record since also going 1-9 in 2018.

There were other factors that went into the Titans' struggles. Around 40 players left the program in the offseason after Trumbly's predecessor, Justin Roberts, resigned on Jan. 13.

Matt Trumbly spent 12 years with the University football program.

“I love the kids that are here, and I got a really good coaching staff,” Trumbly told the Daytona Beach News-Journal. “For our first year, I was really pleased with my staff. It’s got some young guys on here that I think are going to be very good coaches.”

The Titans are the first Volusia-Flagler school to have a head coaching vacancy this offseason. It occurred six days after University completed its season with a 28-14 loss to Deltona.

“I didn’t meet my expectations that I set for the program. I know what the program can be,” Trumbly said.

While Trumbly is leaving as the school’s head coach, he will remain on staff as a faculty member as he determines his next steps.

“I don’t know what the next chapter is,” he said. “We’ll figure that out as we go.”

University will begin its search for a new coach in the coming days.
