On Monday, Marcus Stokes was named an American Conference Honorable Mention after throwing for four touchdowns against UT Martin.
Every week the American Conference hands out its weekly awards, and eight players were listed after week three. Stokes was one of five players named as an honorable mention.
South Florida’s running back DJ Crowther was named the conference Offensive Player of the Week after running for 101 yards and adding 40 receiving yards against Delaware State, while the conference named ECU’s safety Ayden Ducanson the Defensive Player of the Week after a pick-six against Old Dominion. Tulsa’s Trepan Jones picked up the Special Teams Player of the Week award after returning a kickoff for a touchdown in the win over East Texas A&M.
FAU defensive Back Chris Tooley III, Charlotte defensive back Collin Gill, Temple quarterback Ajani Sheppard and Tulsa running back Seth Davis were all named as honorable mentions alongside Stokes.
Stokes was extremely comfortable in his second start inside Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, and he finished the game with 258 yards and four touchdowns. After back-to-back games games with an interception, the quarterback did a nice job moving the ball through the air without giving it away.
Stokes went 4-for-5 on the first drive of the game, setting up a 30-yard field goal to take the first lead of the game. After throwing his first incompletion of the game on the Tigers’ eighth play of the game, the quarterback went on to complete 18 straight passes before halftime.
Stokes ended the first half 21-for-22 with 216 yards and three touchdowns.
He returned to the field in the second half and quickly found Hunter Tipton for his fourth and final touchdown of the game. Charles Huff made the decision late in the third quarter to take Stokes out of the game and replace him with backup Air Noland.
The starting quarterback finished the game 26-for-32 for 258 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. All four touchdowns were to different receivers, and he connected with 10 different pass-catchers during the game.
“I think it just goes with just doing my job and going through my reads and making the correct one,” Stokes said. “Obviously, I’m super happy for all the receivers. I’m pretty sure all of them got a target today, or almost all of them. Not a lot of teams do that, but being able to do that, I feel like it’s a lot of people and you can’t just double one person. We’re going to everybody, so it’s just something to look out for.”
On the year, Stokes has thrown for 1,053 yards, nine touchdowns and three interceptions. He also ranks in the top 15 nationally in passing yards (third), Passing touchdowns (sixth) and passing efficiency (13th).
