Week 5’s college football Saturday started with a standalone game, at least for an hour.

Due to inclement weather concerns, Charlotte moved its homecoming matchup with Memphis from 3:30 p.m. ET to 11 a.m. ET, becoming the earliest regular season kickoff since Sept. 9, 2023. However, the game was essentially over by the time the rest of the noon slate kicked off.

Underdog 49er teams fought the Tigers to the finish in 2023 and 2024, but the 2026 meeting did not feature an iota of competition. Memphis annihilated Charlotte, 59-8, and the 51-point separation represented the Tigers’ largest against a conference opponent since 2017. Since Memphis joined the FBS, it was also the program’s largest margin of victory on the road ever.

Coming off a bye week, Memphis made quick work of the winless 49ers, setting the tone with a 93-yard touchdown bomb in the opening minutes. Quarterback Marcus Stokes posted a near-perfect stat-line, completing 20-of-25 passes for 318 yards and five touchdowns without an interception. Even backup quarterback Air Noland checked in and delivered a sixth passing touchdown in an offensive clinic.

Five different Tigers were the recipient of a Stokes or Noland touchdown delivery. Hunter Tipton, who leads all FBS tight ends in receiving yards, continued his breakout campaign with 60 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Tipton produced one of the most impressive highlights of the afternoon, snagging a one-handed catch on a tunnel screen and navigating for a 28-yard touchdown.

The run game added 288 yards and two touchdowns as six different ball carriers logged over 25 yards, and all six averaged at least 4.0 yards per carry. In aggregate, Memphis more than tripled Charlotte’s offensive output, winning the yardage battle 674-209.

The Tiger defense not only produced stops, but it generated consistent turnovers as well. Memphis won the turnover battle 4-0. Ian Foster ended one of the more promising Charlotte drives of the day by snatching an interception from a receiver at the Tigers’ 20-yard line. While Memphis couldn’t capitalize on that first interception, it did for the other three takeaways, notching 17 points from its three fumble recoveries.

For Charlotte, it was another game of futility, just like each previous entry this season. The 49ers avoided a shutout on a 75-yard Henry Rutledge touchdown on the opening play of the second half but were otherwise silenced on the scoreboard. Cole Gonzales remained the starting quarterback and completed 6-of-14 passes for 73 yards against a commanding Memphis defense.

Charlotte (0-5, 0-1 American) is one of three remaining winless FBS programs, sharing the undesirable designation with Northern Illinois and ULM. The 49ers own the FBS’s longest losing streak at 14 games. Charlotte has also lost 15 consecutive matchups to FBS opponents and has yet to defeat one under head coach Tim Albin. As ugly as things have been for the 49ers lately, Saturday was lower than usual. The 51-point loss was their largest as American Conference institution and fourth largest since joining the FBS in 2015. Only the margins from the 2015 Middle Tennessee, 2016 Louisville, and 2022 WKU defeat were greater.

Memphis (4-1, 1-0 American) has started 4-1 or better every season since 2022. The Tigers success has been sustained under first-year head coach Charles Huff, who guided one of the program’s most dominant performances in history. Memphis is 1-0 in American play for the fifth-straight year, and the team eyes its first conference championship appearance since 2019. The Tigers avoided another scare against Charlotte, and now they must avoid overlooking their next opponent UAB, which stunned a ranked Memphis team in Birmingham a year ago.
