Miami Announces Malachi Toney News on Wednesday

The No. 10 seed Miami Hurricanes take on the No. 1 Indiana Hoosiers in the national championship game. They’re looking to stay hot, already defeating No. 7 Texas A&M, No. 2 Ohio State and No. 6 Ole Miss in three College Football Playoff games.

The Hurricanes’ offense has been productive this season, averaging 31.6 points per game and 409.2 total yards per game. A big reason for that success has been the emergence of wide receiver Malachi Toney.

Through 15 games, he leads Miami in receptions (99), yards (1,089) and touchdowns (nine). He’s become the favorite target of quarterback Carson Beck.

In his first season with the Hurricanes, he’s establishing himself as one of college football‘s top receivers. On Wednesday, it was announced that Toney was named to the Football Writers Association of America Freshman All-American Team.

The Hurricanes shared the honor in an X post, writing, “Homegrown Hurricanes marking their mark. Malachi and Bryce earn FWAA Freshman All-American honors.”

He was one of two players on the Hurricanes to make the team, joined by defensive back Bryce Fitzgerald. Both are true freshmen this season. Toney becomes the first Miami wide receiver to receive the honor since Ahmmon Richards in 2016.

While it’s an exciting development, he and the rest of Miami stay focused on Indiana. Toney is looking for a big game against a Hoosiers defense that ranks 23rd in the nation in passing yards per game allowed (185.9).

Kickoff is Monday at 7:30 p.m. ET at Hard Rock Stadium, airing on ESPN. Despite playing on their home field, DraftKings places Miami as 8.5-point underdogs.
