Nick Saban and Mario Cristobal apparently remain locked in a friendly conference debate. On The Pat McAfee Show on Friday, Saban joked that the Miami head coach regularly calls him with “this ACC bullsh—” while trying to argue that the ACC is better than the SEC. The legendary former Alabama coach is not buying it.

“He calls me up with this ACC bullshit,” Saban said while shaking his head. “He’s always trying to convince me the ACC is better than the SEC. The SEC has nine teams in the Top 25. That is all I know. It’s a deep conference; it just is.”
“It is what it is. He is never going to convince me that the ACC is better than the SEC.”
Saban won six national championships at Alabama and another at LSU, building his legacy in the SEC. He experienced the conference’s demanding schedule and enormous expectations firsthand.
Cristobal has a compelling response after leading Miami to the national championship game last season. The Hurricanes’ run gave the ACC valuable credibility and proved that its best teams can compete on college football’s biggest stage.
Still, one successful season will not persuade Saban to abandon his SEC loyalty.
The exchange also highlights the relationship between the two coaches. Cristobal worked under Saban at Alabama from 2013 through 2016 as his offensive line coach, giving them enough familiarity to argue about their respective conferences without the conversation becoming overly serious.
Until the ACC consistently matches the SEC’s depth and postseason success, those phone calls are unlikely to change his mind.
