Miami football, Mario Cristobal land elite in-state cornerback A'mir Sears

Miami Columbus (FL) five-star cornerback A'mir Sears made it known on Tuesday, July 28, that he was ready for college when he reclassified from the 2028 class to the 2027 cycle.

He also knew where he'd be committing to play the next level as well.

On Friday, July 31, the 6-foot-1, 178-pounder announced to the nation that he'd be staying close to home to play college ball as he committed to Mario Cristobal and the Miami Hurricanes.

Prior to reclassifying, 247Sports ranked Sears as the top prospect in the 2028 cycle and retained his five-star status in the 2027 class.

Sears will play his final season at Columbus after playing his first two seasons of high school football at West Broward. He played a pivotal role in leading the Bobcats to a state championship for the first time in school history last season.

As a sophomore, he caught 49 passes for 942 yards and 11 touchdowns. He stood out at corner as well, tacking up 61 tackles, 11 pass breakups and three interceptions.

Sears also starred as a freshman, totaling 57 tackles and four interceptions to go along with his 25 receptions for 501 yards and five touchdowns on offense.

West Broward defensive back Amir Sears (1) talks to reporters after losing 31-0 to West Boca in the 6A State Final at Pitbull Stadium on Dec. 12, 2025, in Miami, FL.

Hurricanes land two of the nation's top cornerbacks in the '27 class

With Sears now committed to the class, Miami has two of the nation's top cornerback prospects headlining one of the best classes in the country.

Both commitments also came in unique ways as well.

While Sears reclassified up a class prior to his commitment, Long Beach Poly (CA) cornerback Donte Wright was originally committed to Georgia. He flipped to the Hurricanes on May 9 and stuck to that commitment after his official visits to both schools as well as Michigan and Oregon.

The Hurricanes now have a total of five five-star commitments in their 2027 according to 247Sports. The other three are Montini Catholic (IL) quarterback Israel Abrams, Miami Carol City (FL) wide receiver Nick Lennear and Irmo (SC) edge Jaiden Bryant.

Like Wright, Bryant also flipped his original commitment to the Hurricanes as he was previously committed to LSU.
