The Miami Hurricanes‘ running back room figured to be one of the deepest in the country heading into the 2026 season, coming off an impressive College Football Playoff run ending in a national championship game loss to the Indiana Hoosiers.
After a CFP run that saw the Hurricanes bring back vibes not felt in Miami since the early aughts and a title game appearance, several key contributors were expected back.
Among them were Mark Fletcher Jr., the ACC’s leading rusher in 2025 with 1,192 yards, and CharMar Brown, who racked up 474 rushing yards and nearly matched Fletcher’s 140 receiving yards with 138 himself, both ending with two receiving touchdowns.
An under-the-radar name the Hurricanes could have expected back in 2026, along with those of junior Jordan Lyle, redshirt sophomore Chris Wheatley-Humphrey, and incoming freshman Javian Mallory, was Girard Pringle Jr.

On Wednesday, however, the true freshman officially entered the college football transfer portal after one season in Coral Gables, according to On3’s Hayes Fawcett.
Pringle, a former four-star recruit out of Seffner, FL, and the No. 7 running back in his class, per 247Sports Composite, will depart Miami after an impressive debut that saw him rush for 375 yards and four touchdowns in just nine games and 62 carries. The running also grabbed four passes for 53 yards and one receiving touchdown.
If anything, Pringle was one of the most efficient players in Miami’s offense throughout the 2025 season. He averaged over six yards per carry and 13.3 yards per reception.
Despite leading Miami in yards per attempt, Pringle remained behind Fletcher and Brown on the depth chart, saw limited action steadily in the team’s College Football Playoff games, and finished with 66 opportunities compared to Fletcher’s 233 and Brown’s 142.
Pringle’s decision comes just two days after Miami’s 27–21 loss to Indiana in the national title game, and it follows a wave of departures from the school as 17 Hurricanes have now entered the portal, according to On3.
Given his production as a true freshman, Pringle should attract heavy interest in the transfer portal and land in a strong school ahead of the 2026 season, even more having three years of eligibility left and elite top-end speed.
Coming out of high school and before committing to Miami slightly over a year ago, Pringle received 36 scholarship offers from all around the country, including from heavyweights such as Alabama, Auburn, Florida and Georgia, among others.
